Ambien (zolpidem) is used to treat insomnia. Its effects are based on slowing down the activity in the brain. Patients normally feel sleepy after taking Ambien, so it’s best to take this drug right before you are going to go to bed. Ambien will provide you with 7-8 hours of sleep. If you do not plan to sleep for that long you shouldn’t take Ambien as otherwise memory problems may be experienced. Tell your health care provider if you are currently taking antidepressants, itraconazole, sertraline, mental illness, pain, or seizure medications, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, medications for anxiety, colds or allergies meds etc. These drugs can cause interactions or make your medicine less efficient. Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as otherwise dangerous health effects may take place.
